Blue Foam CNC Contour Model
There’s a million ways to make a site model with a gradient, and there’s no real right or wrong way, but with all model making the success is down to the preparation. This method uses many area clearances all with different cut depths, these are organised before by using layers in AutoCAD (see induction handout). All the polylines must be perfectly closed loops with no open or duplicate lines at all. It takes a lot of time and scrutiny to clean up a file good enough to CNC in this way. It also takes a long time to load on to the machine and to cut out (this job is 400 x 400mm and took around 2.5 hours to machine). Because of this I tend not to encourage this method, but with every problem the goal is to find the correct tool and process for the job, and some models might warrant this approach.
