3D Printed Grid Frame and Gnome
This model is of a hot air balloon factory, where forms are built and then the hot air balloon is pushed out against the frame. Lattices and grid structures are really hard to 3D print with the 3D printers we have, (hence why we are looking to procure a new SLA or PolyJet printer). But they can be done. We used the ZCorp powder printer to make this model. The grid structure is the most difficult as it is incredibly brittle and falls apart easily when removing the print from the support powder. Each member of the grid frame has a diameter of 2.5mm which is the minimum we are able to print. removing the print takes a lot of patience and a steady hand, taking over an hour to vacuum the support powder away, and then the curing process poses another challenge entirely.
